Ebola virus was first introduced to society in 1976 , when the first outbreaks of the disease occurred simultaneously in two locations:
The discovery of Ebola marked the beginning of scientific research into this deadly virus and its transmission dynamics. Since then, several outbreaks have occurred across Africa, with notable epidemics including the 2014–2016 West African outbreak, which was the largest in history, and smaller outbreaks in subsequent years.
- Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) : The outbreak occurred near the Ebola River, which gave the virus its name. This strain was later identified as the Zaire ebolavirus .
- Sudan (now South Sudan) : A separate outbreak occurred in a region called Nzara, caused by what was later identified as the Sudan ebolavirus .
